Welcome to year 3 and 4.

We will begin the Autumn Term by focusing on the book Journey by Aaron Becker. As we read the book will focus on developing our CPSHE knowledge and skills. We will discuss the different values within the book and develop our understanding of the values we have in school.

Our topic for the remainder of Autumn Term is ‘Blast From The Past’. We will begin the topic with an exciting hook day, where children will experience what a day would have been like in a Victorian school. During the topic, we will focus on developing our skills, knowledge and understanding in History. We will learn about what life was like for children during the Victorian Era and make comparisons with our lives today. We will learn all about Queen Victoria’s reign, the British Empire and key events and inventions that helped shape Britain today.

In English, we will write Non-Chronological reports about the Victorians as well as learning the playscript Oliver Twist. We will also use a Mr P ICT unit to write our own Halloween poems. During the term we will also read the book Street Child by Berlie Doherty and use this text to write in a range of genres.

In Maths, we will focus on building and strengthening our knowledge of place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division and area.

In Science, we will develop our knowledge and understanding of States of Matter. We will compare and group materials together, according to whether they are solids, liquids or gases and we will observe how some materials change state when they are heated or cooled. We will use this knowledge to identify the part played by evaporation and condensation in the water cycle and associate the rate of evaporation with temperature. In Science we will also learn about sound. We will identify how sounds are made, associating some of them with something vibrating. We will recognise that vibrations from sounds travel through a medium to the ear and we will investigate how pitch and volume can change.

In Design and Technology, we will learn and apply the principles of a healthy varied diet. We will learn about seasonality, and know where a variety of ingredients are grown, reared, caught and processed. We will prepare and cook a pease pudding following a Victorian recipe.

We will develop our creative skills in Art by using our painting and digital media skills to create a piece of artwork using pointillism based on the work from artist Georges Seurat, Paul Signac, Roy Lichenstein.

In Music we will use and understand staff and other musical notations, understand high and low pitches and  listen with attention to detail and recall sounds with increasing aural memory.

In Computing, we will learn about computer networks including the internet. We will use search technologies effectively, appreciate how results are selected and ranked, and be discerning in evaluating digital content. In our Online Safety lessons will learn how to manage our online information, including our privacy and security and we will learn about the importance of Copyright and Ownership.

You will not need to bring your PE kits to school but you can wear your PE kits on our PE days. Some PE will be outside so please make sure you’ll be warm enough.  This term we will be developing our skills and techniques in Sports Hall Athletics, Tag Rugby, Dance, Netball.

You can support us by listening to your child read regularly, helping them learn their times tables and practice their spelling. Children will receive a reward and raffle ticket each time they read at home (you can sign their link book or they could upload a photo/video to Seesaw). Children can become ‘Maths Champions’ and receive a special pencil when they know all the times tables and division facts up to 12x12 and are able to use them to solve a variety of problems. Homework is set at the start of the year and children will be rewarded for each piece they do.

We look forward to learning lots of new and interesting things this term!
