Welcome to year 3 and 4.
To welcome the children back after Easter, we will be engaging the children in a fun Easter Egg hunt. The children will follow the clues around the school, solving the riddles that will lead them to a bounty of chocolate eggs. This will support the children in their recount writing at the start of the term.
Our topic for the Summer Term is ‘Climate Change’. During the topic, we will focus on developing our skills, knowledge and understanding in Geography. Throughout our Geography lessons we will understand more about rivers, volcanoes and earthquakes. We will use this knowledge and understanding to support our writing in English where we will produce a story about a river’s journey. To hook us into this topic, we will be going on a trip to Gloucester Waterways Museum where we will learn all about the River Severn and take part in a tailored workshop. We will also have a day where we spend observing the River Severn from the viewpoint.
In English we will write a recount, write a story based on the book ‘The River’, write a playscript for a Newsround special on climate change, write a postcard and a biography for a fictional character.
In Maths, we will focus on building and strengthening our knowledge of time, decimals, money, shape, position and direction and statistics.
In Design and Technology, we will understand and apply the principles of a healthy varied diet, we will prepare and cook and range of Spanish dishes. We will all learn about seasonality and know where a variety of ingredients are grown, reared and caught and processed.
In Science compare and group together different kinds of rocks on the basis of their appearance and simple physical properties, we will describe in simple terms how fossils are formed when things that have lived are trapped within rock and we will recognise that soils are made from rocks and organic matter. We will make some of our own fossils and some chocolate rocks!
In Art we will learn about mixed-media and the different techniques involved in creating a mixed-media poster. Our final piece of artwork will be a mixed-media poster about climate change.
In Music, we are focusing on the structure of music, ensuring that it has a beginning, middle and end. We will compose music to different stimuli, for example stories and images.
In PSHE will we learn about Living in the Wider World, including how media, commerce and social issues shape our understanding of the world. We will also learn about the British Values.
In Computing we will develop our typing skills and we will select, use and combine a variety of software. In Online Safety lessons we will also focus on Online Relationships, Self-Image and Identity and Online Reputation.
In PE we will be developing our skills in rounders, hockey and athletics. You will not need to bring your PE kits to school but you can wear your PE kits on our PE days. Some PE will be outside so please make sure you’ll be warm enough.
Homework will be set at the start of the year on Seesaw. Children can upload any homework they complete on Seesaw or they can keep a record in their Reading Link book. Any homework children complete will be rewarded.
You can support us by listening to your child read regularly, helping them learn their times tables and practice their spelling. Children will receive a reward and raffle ticket (which enters them into a draw to win a prize) each time they read at home (you can sign their link book or they could upload a photo/video to Seesaw). Children can become ‘Maths Champions’ and receive a special pencil when they know all the times tables and division facts up to 12x12 and are able to apply them to solve a variety of problems. Homework is set at the start of the year and children will be rewarded for each piece they do.
We look forward to learning lots of new and interesting things this term!
