Welcome to Years 1 and 2

Welcome to Years 1 and 2, where we build on the strong foundations of the Early Years and help our children grow into confident, happy and increasingly independent learners.

Learning across the phase is exciting, purposeful and practical, giving children lots of opportunities to explore, discover and develop their curiosity. Information about learning for this term can be found on the our termly overview pages below. Each new topic begins with an exciting hook day to capture children’s imagination and enthusiasm for what they are about to learn.

As children move through Years 1 and 2, we support them to develop the essential skills they need for future learning. There is a strong focus on becoming fluent and confident readers, developing secure mathematical understanding and learning to communicate ideas clearly. Alongside this, we encourage children to ask questions, have a go, learn from their mistakes and take increasing responsibility for their own learning.

How You Can Help at Home

There are lots of simple ways you can support your child’s learning at home:

  • read together regularly and talk about the books you enjoy;
  • practise the phonics your child is learning in school;
  • practise reading and spelling the red words on your child’s colour bookmark;
  • enjoy Numberblocks together;
  • play maths games using the White Rose Maths app; and
  • use Phonics Play to practise and reinforce phonics skills.

Reading at Home

Regular reading at home makes a huge difference to your child’s progress. Please aim to listen to your child read regularly and record this in their Reading Link Book.

Each time your child reads at home, they will receive an acorn and a tally towards our end-of-term reading raffle. Reading does not have to be limited to their school reading book. Sharing and enjoying other books at home counts too!

Please remember to sign your child’s reading record so that we know they have read and can have their rewards.

PE

Children should come to school wearing their PE kit on PE days, so there is no need to bring a separate kit to school. Some PE lessons will take place outside, so please make sure that children are dressed appropriately for the weather.

For safety, children should only wear stud earrings to school. Earrings must be removed or covered for PE lessons.

Homework

Homework will be shared at the start of the year.  Children can upload their completed homework to Seesaw or record what they have done in their Reading Link Book.

We recognise and reward the effort children put into completing their homework tasks.

Above all, we want Years 1 and 2 to be a happy and exciting time when children develop a love of learning, grow in confidence and independence, discover new interests and feel proud of everything they achieve. We look forward to sharing this important stage of their journey with them.
