Welcome to Squirrels class. Your teachers’ names are Mrs Bennett and Mrs Jones. Mrs Jones will teach the class on a Monday and Mrs Bennett will teach the class Tuesday to Friday. The other adults who will be working in our classroom during the week are Miss Prawl, Mrs Mattacola  and Mrs Cousins.

Our topic for the Summer Term is ‘Games Wide Open’ and throughout the term we will be developing skills across the curriculum in Geography, Science and D&T. We will start the topic with an exciting hook day allowing children to take part in a ‘Mini Olympics!’

In Geography, children will learn about the history of the Olympics and the seven continents and five oceans, with a particular focus on this year’s Olympic host country, France and the previous host country, Japan. In D&T we will be exploring different foods from countries taking part in the Olympics. We will also be making some delicious crepes inspired by the Olympic host country, France. During our Art lessons we will be looking at artwork from the famous French artists Monet and Mattisse. The children will also be recreating some of the artists famous pieces and creating their own art in the style of the artists.

During PSHE this term we will be learning about living in the wider world. We will be thinking about our rights and responsibilities and those of others and how we show respect and tolerance.  We will be studying our community and the part that we and others play in our community. We will also be looking at what we need and what we want and how we manage our money. In Online Safety and PSHE, we shall be studying the influence that media has on us and understand the affect it can have a person.

In our outdoor PE sessions this term, we will be exploring athletic events and developing the skills of throwing, running and jumping. The children will explore Olympic events like Javelin, Shot Put, Long Jump and relay races. At the end of the term, the children will work in a group to design and evaluate their own Olympic event! For our indoor PE sessions this term the children will be able to work in small groups, practicing sharing and turn taking. In these lessons, the children will be exploring new team games, trust exercises and orienteering activities. By the end of the term, the children will be detectives, working in teams to crack the code.

Squirrels PE days are Thursday and Friday, so please ensure that your child wears their PE kit to school on these days.  P.E kit should consist of; a plain coloured (preferably white or blue) t-shirt/polo shirt, a plain blue or navy jumper, black or navy blue shorts/joggers and trainers or daps.

Homework will be set at the start of the term on Seesaw. Children can upload their work to Seesaw at the end of the term or as they finish each task. If you would prefer a paper copy of the homework please just let us know and we will send a copy home.  Children will receive rewards for completed homework tasks.

It is also essential that you hear your child read daily and support them with their phonics. An R1 and a raffle ticket will be given each time your child reads at home. At the end of term, a raffle will be drawn and the winner will get a small prize. Please remember to sign children’s reading record to let us know they have read so they can earn their raffle tickets. You can support us by helping your child learn their times tables (2s, 5s and 10s) and practice reading and spelling the red words from their colour bookmark. Children in year 2 can become ‘Maths Champions’ and receive a special pencil when they know their 2, 5 and 10 times tables and division facts.

We look forward to an exciting Summer term filled with many engaging learning opportunities.
